Fractional laser is a non-invasive resurfacing treatment that uses either Erbium:Yag or CO2 laser to deliver a laser beam onto the skin.
The laser beam is divided into thousands of tiny but deep columns of treatment into the skin which is called microthermal treatment zones (MTZs). It targets both the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin.
By using MTZs, the laser targets and treats intensively within the zone while surrounding healthy tissue remain unaffected and helps heal the wound.
This method is advantageous due to minimal damage to healthy skin areas.

How is the fractional laser treatment performed?
Prior to treatment, an anaesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area to minimise pain during the treatment. It takes about 45-60 minutes for the anaesthetic to take full effect.
A cooling device may be used to reduce the discomfort during the procedure. Treatment time will depend on the areas being treated, but a full face will take around 30 minutes.
How many sessions are needed?
The treatment is performed in sessions. According to the type of complaint, treatment can be performed at least for 3-5 sessions, spaced one month apart.
What can be expected after the fractional laser procedures and what is the healing process like?
There may be a sunburn sensation for about an hour after the procedure. The skin will look red after the treatment but will fade over the next 2-3 days. Swelling is usually minimal and should also resolve in 2-3 days.
Within a few days after the procedure, the skin may have a bronze appearance, which can last up to 2 weeks. Flaking of the skin may also occur as new skin replaces dead skin tissue, which can be treated with a moisturising cream.
What are the contraindications of the fractional laser?
- Active infection and inflammation of the skin
- Systemic isotretinoin within the last six months
- Pregnancy
When do outcomes of the fractional laser appear?
Collagen synthesis starts three months after the treatment. Best outcomes will be seen 6 to 12 months after the procedure.
Postcare Advice
During the healing phase and for several months after treatment, it is recommended that the treatment area is protected using a moisturising sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50 to protect the skin from sun exposure. Sunbathing should be avoided for 6 to 12 months.
