Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces more melanin causing a darker patch of skin. It is a very common skin condition affecting people of all skin types.

Not all hyperpigmentations are the same. It is important to consult a doctor to check what type of pigmentation you are having as the treatment for each pigmentation is different.

Sun spots (Solar lentigenes)

They appear as flat, well-circumscribed patch. They can be round, oval or irregular in shape and size varies from a few milimetres to centimetres in diameter.The sun the causative factor in this type of pigmentation. They occur anywhere on the face, back of the hands and body.

Freckles (Ephelides)

Commonly seen in people with light complexion. They are small, flat brown spots which develop on sun exposed area like the face.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Skin pigmentation that occur due to skin injury like trauma, burns, acne and eczema.

Melasma

A very common condition usually seen in women of childbearing age. It presents as irregularly shaped, but often distinctly defined, blotches of light- to dark-brown pigmentation. These patches are usually seen on the upper lip, nose, cheeks, chin, forehead and sometimes, the neck. The causes include hormonal changes, pregnancy, genetic predisposition and sun exposure.

Hori's Nevus

Appears as symmetrical grey-brown or blue-grey spots most commonly on the cheek. They may also appear the temples, nose, eyelids and forehead. The causes include genetic predisposition and hormones.

Nevus of Ota

Blue pigmentation which occurs on the face and can involve the sclera (whites of the eye). It can also involve the forehead and around the eye. It occurs at birth or at puberty.
