Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. Normally, the body produces sweat to regulate body temperature. However, sometimes the nerves that control the sweat glands become overactive and excess sweat is produced. This can have a significant impact on one’s self-confidence and impair their quality of life.

It is an increasingly common ailment that commonly affects the underarms (axillary region). Other common sites include the hands (palmar) and feet (plantar).

Botulinum Toxin (Botox) is being increasingly recognized as a therapy for hyperhidrosis. Sweat glands require a nerve impulse to be activated. Without this stimulation, sweat production is prevented. By injecting Botox into problem areas such as underarms, hands and feet, the related nerve impulse is temporarily relaxed and prevented from reaching the sweat gland. This, in turn, stops sweat production in the treated area.

Initially, the area is cleansed and numbing cream is applied. Tiny injections of Botox are then administered to the affected area. The entire process takes between 10-20 minutes.
